essage from

Permanent Secretary

for Culture

Songkran is widely known as Thailand’s most famous festival.

An important event on the Thai Buddhist calendar, this festival

marks the beginning of the Thai Traditional New Year. Songkran

festival has been celebrated in Bangkok and several regions of

Thailand including some other ASEAN member countries. It has

undoubtedly become increasingly popular worldwide.

A true understanding of traditional knowledge is an important

basis for passing on the cultural tradition. Knowing what it contains

and how it is acquired and held is fundamental to being able to

encourage all parties to be aware of the value of Songkran. They

should also keep in mind that a healthy respect for traditional

practices is greatly appreciated in the Songkran festival using a

sense of fairness, politeness, and above all, consideration for others.

Water, as the essence of the Songkran festivities, has always been

the more delicate water splashing that represents the gentle nature

of the Thai Traditional New Year expressing goodwill, love, compassion

and kindness.

On this occasion, the Ministry of Culture has entrusted the

Department of Cultural Promotion with the publication of the

booklet entitled “Songkran Tradition” outlining the value of cultural

heritage content, what to do and not to do, history and beliefs

based on the Songkran tradition. This booklet helps readers to

gain a deeper understanding and respect for the Songkran tradition

as well as the continued pursuit of its cultural preservation and

enhancement.
