18. Yang Na Tree Cluster, Phetchaburi
The Yang Na Tree Cluster along both sides of
Petchkasem Road and the area in Tham Rong Subdistrict, Ban
Lat District, Phetchaburi Province is 4 - 200 years with the
circumference of 2.90 - 5.50 meters, and the height about
20 - 35 meters, located in Khao Tham Rong - Nong Chang Tai
National Reserved Forest. In almost every summer each year,
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej while he was still reigning,
visited Klai Kangwon Palace in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. On
the way through Tha Yang District to the Palace between the
176 – 179 kilometer marker, he saw many large Yang Na trees
growing naturally and wanted to conserve this Yang Na cluster.
However, it could not be proceeded as His Majesty wished
because it was where people lived and earned their living. His
Majesty graciously asked the Bureau of the Royal Household
official to collect the seeds in April 1961 and planted them in the
Chitralada Palace. The others were planted by himself in pots
on the roof of Klai Kangwon Palace. on July 28, 1961, when the
seedlings were 4-month-old which was the birthday
of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn holding the
position of the Crown Prince at that time, His Majesty
the King Bhumibol, along with Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and
His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn planted Yang Na trees
in the field of the Demonstration Forest Project in Chitralada
Palace. His Majesty the King Bhumibol graciously asked the
Faculty of Forestry of Kasetsart University and the Royal
Chitralada Project to conduct research studies in the area. Over
time, the number of Yang Na trees gradually decreased. In 2007,
there were only 119 Yang Na trees left. This is the important
historical evidence and the pride of the people of Phetchaburi.
Currently, the cluster is under the supervision of Tham
Rong Subdistrict Administrative Organization, Ban Lat District,
Phetchaburi Province.
