14. Chamchuri Cluster, Bangkok
The Chamchuri shade in Chulalongkorn University occurred in the reign of King Rama V.
He graciously ordered the construction of Phaya Thai Road through the area of Chulalongkorn
University to connect Sa Pathum Road and Hua Lamphong Road together. In 1909, he had an
order to plant Chamchuri, known at that time as “Kung Kam Kram” trees along both sides of Phaya
Thai Road. Later, the King Rama V ordered the road construction connecting Phaya Thai Road and
Sanam Ma Road, which is now Henri Dunant Road. This road is the first road in Chulalongkorn
University. He also ordered planting Chamchuri on both sides of this road. In 2500, the number
of Chamchuri decreased. Some of them died and were cut down since such area was used
for constructing buildings and facilities to support the growth of the university. On January 15,
1962, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej brought five Chamchuri trees from Klai Kangwon
Palace and planted them in front of Chulalongkorn University Auditorium. His Majesty King
Bhumibol Adulyadej had a royal remark that “…this tree is called Chamchuri, Kam Poo, and it
symbolizes the university. I have grown these five trees and brought them to the university.
I believe that the students here will keep the trees growing and they will be important to the
university in the future…” He also said that “keep these five trees as the reminders”.
His Majesty’s visit to plant five Chamchuri trees on that day was a very important event.
Nowadays, the Chamchuri cluster consists of a total of 459 trees. The oldest one is 102 years.
The largest tree has the circumference of 8 meters and the height of 27 meters.
Currently, the trees are under the supervision of Chulalongkorn University, Phaya Thai
Road, Wang Mai Subdistrict, Pathum Wan District, Bangkok.
