Loy Krathong is currently one of the most favoured festivels of Thailand
among the Thais and foreign visitors. It is celebrated all over the country both
in the cities and in the most remote rural hamlets in its true spirit of merriment
which has made it more popular than ever.
Loy Krathong plays the role of transmitting Thai custom and tradition to
the young generation. All the children and youth should appreciate traditional
Thai values and choose what they consider the best way to uphold and maintain
Loy Krathong festival as the Thai cultural heritage.
The Department of Cultural Promotion deems it necessary to publish
a booklet on Loy Krathong tradition: “Preserve Water and Conserve Culture”
It points out the true value as shown in the spirit of Thai cultural and environmental
awareness. It reflects the gratitude the Thais pay to water as a precious resource
of life in an agricultural society. It is hoped that this book in both the English
language and in the Thai language will promote good understanding of Loy
Krathong tradition, which should be continually preserved and promoted.
