UNESCO City of Gastronomy

	 Phuket is known to be the city with a big variety of food that traces back to the
accumulated cultures from the past, and with a harmony of different origins that become a striking
identity of Phuketโ€™s regional food.  Consequently, the Phuket municipality signed a memorandum
of cooperation with the Office of Contemporary Cultural Arts on 24 May 2011 agreeing to jointly
push forward Phuket to be a part of the UNESCO City of Gastronomy.
	 Then, on 11 December 2015, Mrs Irina Bokova, UNESCO Executive Director, made an
announcement that Phuket could join in as member of the UNESCO City of Gastronomy network.  
Phuket is the first city in Thailand and in Asean to be one of the 18 cities of the world to become
the UNESCO City of Gastronomy 2015.  The Phuket municipality can make use of the name and
logo of UNESCO in various related activities.  UNESCO saw 5 important distinctive points in Phuket:
	 1.	 A big variety of cultures especially food culture
	 2.	 Phuket food has important components in all the festivals and ceremonies, beliefs,
family lives, to welcome and always to impress foreign visitors
	 3.	 Many types of Phuket regional dishes have their own identity that can be found
nowhere else, having their own secret recipes, handing down from one family member to another.  
Most of the ingredients can only be found in Phuket necessitating the conservation of natural
resources and environment in order to last.
	 4.	 The vigour and cooperation from the public and government sectors as well as the
Phuket academic institute create innovation in diversified food technology, for example sale of the
processed regional food into souvenirs; food service in restaurants or hotels in various food festivals
as well as the exchange with international food to increase the value of the goods, economically
magnifying a positive outcome for the city and the people.
	 5.	 Phuket people are generous with Thai Hospitality, willing to exchange knowledge and
experience with other cities in the network.
	 Phuket regional food has been in constant evolution for over 200 years, from originally
family food to big business of cooked food.  The outstanding dishes, with the innovation in the
subsequent period, still retain invariably their original characteristics.
