The Process of Conserving the
Wisdom of the Making of โ€˜Khoi Paperโ€™

Abstract
The research project on the process of conserving the wisdom of the making of
โ€˜Khoi paperโ€™ as commercial Thai artworks aimed to revitalize and develop the production
of Khoi paper at Kao Koet Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Center in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya
Province so as to disseminate the value of wisdom through the process of offering cultural
value as a revenue-generating product and to respond to those who want to preserve the
wisdom of papermaking as well as promoting Khoi paper as paper for creating Thai
commercial art. The objectives were to explore the history of Khoi paper in Thailand and
the importance of conserving Khoi paper making at Kao Koet Royal Folk Arts and Crafts
Center in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, to study the process of Kho papermaking as
Thai art and to encourage the local community to bring the wisdom of papermaking for
commercial use.
The results of the research demonstrated 4 ways for conserving the wisdom of making
paper as follows.
1. For the value of Khoi paper in the historical view, it was found that Khoi Paper
is the background of the art and cultural heritage of Thailand. For instance, Kho paper was
used as Thai ancient notebook and used in other Thai art. Khoi paper should be revitalized
to promote the value of Thai art.
2. For Khoi paper promotion, it was found that the original function should be
modified by creating two-dimensional and three-dimensional art works to expand the
capacity of commercial use of Khoi paper.
3. For improving Khoi paper quality and promotion strategies for Thai commercial
art, it should focus on the process of tissue selection of pulpwood for the whiteness, quality
and price of paper.
4. For marketing, it was found that the role of government agencies in the
development of the Khoi paper market was important in connecting several markets
