The Culture Development and
Conservation Through Community
Participation: A Case Study of Machetes
Production in Nathon Community,
Thatphanom District, Nakhon Phanom

Abstract
The objectives of this research were to; 1) study the Machetes production in the
Ban Nathon Community, Thatphanom District, Nakhon Phanom Province and; 2) promote
cultural conservation base on community participation and knowledge management. The
research is qualitative research, and it took 12 months. The participants consisted of the
researchers, local government officials, seniors in the community, community leaders,
school representatives and temple representatives. The participantโ€s discussed guidelines for
cultural conservation. The research instruments were an interview form and a questionnaire.
The results showed that the people believed in holy things. They worshiped ancestor spirits
and Phu Ta shrine. The people practiced the local tradition called Heet 12 Kong 14 with
the strong belief that it would result in prosperity in their lives and families. In addition,
Ban Nathon Community conserved and disseminated the communityโ€s culture through
activities organized in 5 cultural learning centers including Nathon Subdistrict Cultural Council,
Wat Sri Mongkol Education Center, Nathon Subdistrict Administrative Organization, Nathon
Pattana School and Ban Nathon Machete Production Group. The cultural conservation
guidelines included teaching and learning activities, cultural training and promotion and
awareness raising of cultural values. The seniors and community leaders coordinated with
government officials in determining the procedures and planning of cultural conservation
