Preface
Loy Krathong Tradition is a ceremony to honour the Goddess
of the river. In Thailand, it is annually held on full moon day in
November which is the end of the rain season, most areas around
the rivers and canals are flooded. The people have the same
or different objectives, customs and beliefs depending on each
region. Nevertheless, the most objective is mainly the expression
of gratitude to the value of water for nourishing the human lives.
At present, although Loy Krathong festival is celebrated
all over the country, the new generations do not perceive the
background and values of this tradition. Therefore, the Department
of Cultural Promotion, Ministry of Culture has published the book
of “Loy Krathong Tradition” in order to disseminate the knowledge,
background, objectives and other information of Loy Krathong
Tradition as well as to enhance the people, especially the new
generations, a better understanding of our tradition.
