The Loy Krathong festival is observed during the time
when there is a high water level on the full moon night of
the 12th lunar month. As the most fascinating water-based
cultural event, it represents a close bond between Thai people and
waterways on which they depend for their livelihood. The function
showcases the true artistic value of rituals, costume, flowers
arrangement, fine arts, dance, theatre and other festive entertainments
including light decoration. As a matter of fact, Loy Krathong
is laden with value. It promotes solidarity and cooperation among
community as seen in local activities. These include contests of various
kinds: Krathong designs, the ‘Nang Noppamas’ beauty pageant, dance,
music and so on. It thus serves to transmit the beauty and goodness of
local tradition to young generations. The nationwide annual celebrations
of Loy Krathong enhance the continuity of Thai tradition.
The Ministry of Culture works to promote Loy Krathong festival
as local cultural asset to gain increased revenue, fame and cultural
identity on the national, ASEAN and the global levels.
On behalf of the Ministry of Culture, I am pleased that
the Department of Cultural Promotion has published the book of
“Loy Krathong festival” as a means of developing a deeper understanding
of the intrinsic value, the meaning and the legendary account of this
time-honoured tradition.
