History/Interesting story
Kanoom Jang is a Southern traditional dessert. It has a triangular shape and a long,
clear yellow color. It is widely made in Chaiya District and Tha Chang District in Surat
Thani Province and mostly made during the festivals in the ๏ฌfth month and the sixth
month or the ๏ฌfteenth waxing moon of the ๏ฌfth month and the ๏ฌrst waxing moon of
the sixth month. The dessert is made on the Buddhist Holy Days and cultural festivals
of the people in Surat Thani Province. The people in Surat Thani call Khanoom Jang.
However, it may be called differently in each area such as Khanoom Chang, Khanom
Sang, Khanom Jung, Kee Jang, etc. Unfortunately, the culture of consuming Khanoom
Jang has gradually faded away.
Seasonings consist of sticky rice, water and alkali water. The sticky rice is soaked
in alkali water for 3-5 hours. After that, the sticky rice is wrapped in bamboo leaves or
coconut leaves When ๏ฌnished wrapping, Jang is boiled until cooked and ready to serve.
Uniqueness
Jang is mostly made in the ๏ฌfth month, the six month or the ๏ฌfteenth
waxing moon of the ๏ฌfth month and the ๏ฌrst waxing moon of the sixth month,
on the Buddhist Holy Days and cultural festivals of the people in Surat Thani Province.
