The Trok Khao-Mao Community Local Museum

โ€œExhibiting evidences of occupations, the way of life and the social landscape of
the community; the inheritance of the โ€˜Ram Thonโ€™, the Thai folk dance and the making of
ancient dessertsโ€

The Trok Khao-Mao community, Bangkok-Noi district, originates from the Thonburi period, earning
their living by making the shredded rice grain (Khao Mao) and gardening. During their free time, they would
do the Ram Thon dance in the yard, placing a rice-pounding mortar in the middle of the yard to mark
the centre. In General Por Pibulsongkramโ€™s time, there were restrictions of various performances, setting
standards. However, the Ram Thon dance did not have many restrictions; they only had to sing and dress
โ€˜properlyโ€™. Hence, there were many Ram Thon dance songs, recorded in the local history. Furthermore,
there was the Great East Asia War at that time and the Ram Thon dance was the only way for the people
to relax.

The Narration

The museum exhibits evidences of the occupations, the way of life and the social landscape of the
Trok Khao-Mao community. The items and information of the community and the neighboring Bangkok-Noi,
Thonburi, were put together for the young generation of the community, students and the general public
to learn and promote the features that are the identity of the community like the communityโ€™s ancient
dessert : caramel (galamae), red glutinous rice (kaoniew dang), Thai sweet made of rice, nuts, sesame seeds
and sugar (krayasart) and sour rice (khao-mao mee).

The Moral Value - the Owner of the Culture

The Trok Kao-Mao community has preserved the Ram Thon dance and developed it into the
everlasting Ram Wong (Thai Folk Dance).

Letโ€™s look for the charm of cultural traveling together
